hi all. just asking a question and was wondering if you lot know if its true..... my brother is on holiday in scotland and whilst on a coach trip he commented to the driver about all the deer he could see... the driver said they are becoming a pest in places and in one area they have released wolfs in an atempt to curb there spread.... i carnt see it to be true but thought i'd see what you lot know??

Yeah there was a long debate about doing so; they would control the deer, they are natural, they are actually native, more tourism, but people reckon they would also attack the hikers, however wolves rarely attack humans when there's other food around.. I don't actually remember the conclusion of the debate (if any) but I'm pretty sure it hasn't been done yet as the amount of media hype it would get would be phenomenal.

They may have released some on alladale estate, theres some loony thinking he can recreate the old scotland with bears, wolves and christ knows what else onto his estate to attract tourists :hmm::wallbash:

His great plan is a self managing deer population etc :wallbash: Think i'll stick to a rifle :gunsmilie:

Well, in my humble opinion, these animals should still be here in the UK, so im all for bringing them all back. Todays hunters wouldnt dream of eradicating a native species of ours, so why do we think its a good thing that its happened in the past?

I cant think of a reson why they cant be reintroduced to an unhinhabitated island off the mainland.they could be supplimented with feeds and the tourism generated by boat sighting tours would raise more than enough to cover costs..but than I sometimes wonder if I am the only non blinkered person in the zoo world.

It's a tough one mate! Problem is the UK is not the place it was when they were last resident here. They were displaced by the massive deforestation that's taken place for farmland over the last 1000 years or so. I reckon that had as much of an impact on their numbers as hunting did. I'd love to see them back though.

There would be issues with re-introducing most of the large species we once had.... wolves/lynx would obviously cause trouble among livestock from time to time, but big deal, so do foxes and badgers but we dont exterminate them from the island. It would be a pest control job, end of. I cant see why we couldnt re-introduce the big deer species that we lost. But ive got to admit, the island is probably too crowded for brown bear thesedays.
